Intellectual disability nursing studies equip you to provide stimulation, emotional support, and nursing care for persons with intellectual disability, of all ages and abilities, in residential and community settings. It emphasises the importance of working with other professionals, and family members, in planning and implementing a therapeutic programme of care, to provide for the needs of those that cannot be met independently, and to help them achieve greater independence.

As a student on this programme you will develop the professional knowledge, skills and attitude needed to meet the specific needs of all groups of people with intellectual disability. Nurses who work with persons with intellectual disability have a diversity of roles, from intensive physical nursing of profoundly disabled individuals, to supportive guidance in the management and habilitation of children, adolescents and adults.
